Paradise City
|
After South Africa and Swaziland, Cara has reached her third African country – Madagascar. And she seems to have landed on her feet too, with the relative luxury of a swish hotel (complete with swimming pool) and surroundings that she describes as “paradise”. This is Cara’s first ever beach-based vacation, and she’s determined to kick back, relax and enjoy every moment. And as she puts it, she has the freakin’ ocean as her back yard – we’re not jealous. Honest.
But the road to paradise is never smooth, and Cara suffered her fair share of transport woes along the way. After suffering a minor bout of pteromerhanophobia (that’s fear of flying to you and me), she had to endure a long, uncomfortable car journey, which involved a full-blown breakdown. This is becoming somewhat of a Gap Year tradition, after Amy’s taxi troubles in Russia and Lewis’s many transport problems in Bolivia. Welcome to the club, Cara! Surely it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the gang are recruited?

Shooting in the Rain
|
It’s a somewhat unusual video today on The Gap Year - a good old-fashioned one man show. That man is Andre Tardiff, who this week produced, directed, shot and starred in his own video. The reason for this is that his PD Tom had a wedding to attend in Croatia, so Andre was left on his own as Tom took a well-earned break. HQ therefore challenged Andre to tell the story of the week in his own way, armed only with an ancient digital camera and a very slow internet connection. HQ was very pleased with the result; so much so that Tom is now worried that he might be out of a job…
The main theme of the video seems to be “Stuck”. Firstly, Andre’s bus got stuck behind a crashed lorry on a mountain road, and he was later stuck in a monsoon, this time without a big metal vehicle for protection. I’d like to say there were no sniggers back at HQ when we saw footage of Andre getting completely drenched, but that would be untrue. It’s lucky Andre saw the funny side, otherwise the video would have been a bit of a damp squib. Luckily, he’s not so wet as to take offence at our jokes. He looked good with his top off too – he’s certainly no drip.

Sit down, you're Rox in the boat
|
Roxy’s had an enjoyable week on Australia’s west coast, working for King’s Ningaloo Reef Tours as part of her working holiday placement. But this was no 9-to-5 daily grind – Roxy’s working day involved dolphin watching, snorkeling and swimming with whale sharks! Not the worst job in the world, perhaps just behind professional sports person and ice cream tester in terms of dream careers. The water looks beautiful, as do the sea turtles and whale sharks. It’s great to see Roxy being so enthusiastic and excited about her daily routine.
Roxy also meets up with a fellow traveller on a working holiday placement, and learns more about the process. It’s a great way to fund your travels, and is well worth considering if you’re planning your own Gap Year. It may sound crazy to want to work while you’re away, but as well as earning money, it can be a great way to meet people, and above all else, it can be a hell of a lot of fun. How often do you get a chance to spend a week swimming with whale sharks AND get paid for it?
